Irrigator Compliance and Calibration Testing Made Easy.

Secure the long-term success of your farm by using water wisely.

What is CatchCan.co.nz?

CatchCan.co.nz, powered by SCADAfarm and supported by Irrigation New Zealand, helps growers, industry, and compliance bodies assess irrigation system performance.

By using Catch Can (collector) tests, users can measure application depth, rate, and uniformity, ensuring systems operate efficiently. It is particularly beneficial for operations with financial or production goals tied to irrigation.

Catch Can collector testing can help users:

  • Assess Uniformity Evaluate how consistently water is distributed across the irrigation area.
  • Determine Application Rate Measure the amount of water delivered per unit area over a specific time.
  • Identify Performance Issues Detect inefficiencies, such as clogged nozzles, uneven pressure, or poor sprinkler alignment.

How Does It Work?

CatchCan.co.nz provides tools for conducting two types of tests for centre pivot irrigators:

  • Uniformity and application rate Calibration test (basic) A quick check to verify basic system performance and uniformity. This is not a full uniformity assessment, it's a quick test, aligned to the Irrigation NZ performance assessment calibration test standards.
  • Uniformity and application rate Performance Audit test (detailed) A thorough assessment for compliance and optimal performance. This test aligns to the Irrigation NZ performance assessment test standards.

Both tests involve strategically placing collectors to collect water, recording system data, and using the app to analyse results.

Who Can Use It?

Anyone with a basic understanding of their irrigation system's KPIs can use the app. It simplifies complex calculations, making it accessible to a wide range of users. New users are encouraged to explore IrrigationNZ's resources and training courses for guidance.

Additional support on the outcomes and results of your test can be supported by your irrigation partners or other suitably qualified parties. For more information on training and qualifications in the New Zealand irrigation industry visit irrigationnz.co.nz.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do results differ between the old app and this tool?

Both the legacy Bucket test app and catchcan.co.nz use the same base maths. Irrigation testing is a snapshot in time, so variations in site conditions or system wear can affect results. Ensure the catchcan.co.nz instructions are followed and consult your irrigation partners for guidance on improving system outcomes.

Does IrrigationNZ or SCADAfarm complete on-site Catch Can tests?

No, IrrigationNZ promotes efficient water use but doesn't conduct field tests. SCADAfarm supports tool outcomes but does not complete field tests. For field testing, contact your irrigation company or refer to accredited assessors on the IrrigationNZ website.

I failed my Catch Can test — can you help me fix it?

The tool provides a platform for completing tests and standardised reporting to support operations and compliance. We do not provide in-field assessments or product support. If you're concerned about your test results, send your report and field data to [email protected] with the subject "catch can query." Our support is focused on the tool, not field system fixes. Irrigation NZ offers a list of accredited assessors and Irrigation providers for further assistance.

How do I update my irrigator after changes to my pivot (e.g., length, flow rate, sprinkler type)?

At this stage, the best option is to create a new irrigator profile. Editing or deleting irrigators is not supported. Use logical naming (e.g., serial number and update date) to track changes.
